Claires of Sandton

Come stay ... highly developed and prosperous area

Sandton Area

Attractions
The offical City of Johannesburg website says of Sandton:

'Stretching from northern suburbs such as Bryanston to Norwood and Houghton in the south, Region 3 is one of the most highly developed and prosperous areas not only in the city, but in the entire country.

The urban area of Sandton itself, which forms the core of the region, has become the new financial centre of South Africa and Johannesburg's premier business centre. Its selection to host the World Summit on Sustainable Development in August/September 2002 was a notable acknowledgement of its world-class facilities. It is also the location of the JSE Securities Exchange and numerous financial houses as well as some of the country's top hotels.

The Sandton region as a whole is largely made up of high-income residential suburbs and major business/entertainment centres, among the latter being Randburg, Rosebank and Norwood. It is a visually attractive area, well treed and watered with streams. There is major high rise development in the Sandton City area, and some in Randburg and Rosebank.

The attractions of Region 3 are typical of a First World-style urban area, numerous and all but irresistible to the residents of the Johannesburg unicity. For visitors from further afield, five-star and boutique hotels abound.

The Sandton City/Sandton Square complex provides throngs of visitors with luxury and utility shopping, cinemas and numerous restaurants. It is also home to the highly successful Liberty Theatre on the Square. Other important upmarket malls, each with a wide range of restaurants, are found in Rosebank, Hyde Park and Killarney, all of which also have cinema complexes. Hyde Park has an Imax cinema. Smaller centres and individual venues are found throughout the area. A few blocks along the main road of Norwood have become a major restaurant and entertainment strip.

To the north, a major recent addition to the region's attractions has been the Tuscany-styled Montecasino centre with its casino, luxury hotel, restaurants and cinemas.

In the north-west, the restaurants and activities at the Randburg Waterfront are a major drawcard, especially for families and the young. The Randburg Waterfront not only offers excellent shopping but also cinemas, go-karting, video arcades, action golf and ten-pin bowling.

Numerous parks exist in Region 3 and there is no shortage of sporting grounds and golf courses. Well-patronised facilities include the Johannesburg Country Club in the far north of the region, and the Houghton Golf Course towards the south. Wanderers is a cricket mecca of international fame.

For the benefit of residents, several suburbs have recreation centres, some of them providing a wide variety of activities - and the most rudimentary list of Region 3's attractions would not be complete without mention of the world-class Johannesburg Zoo, situated on Jan Smuts Avenue in the south of the region.'
